Franciscan Sisters Make Austin Texas Area Vocation Outreach

by Sister Julie Ann on March 19, 2015

Recently, Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity not only responded to an invitation to meet Texas State students at Our Lady of Holy Wisdom Parish, San Marcos, TX, but visited other significant Austin area Catholics. (Believe it or not, we actually receive quite a few internet visitors on our ‘We Invite You’ page from this part of the country.) It was a memorable time of prayer and interaction.

Franciscan Sister Mary Ann Spanjers at Our Lady of Holy Wisdom San Marcos TXArriving in time to meet @150 young people for free enchilada lunch at Our Lady of Holy Wisdom Parish, we enjoyed many a conversation and invited students to come to a 5:45 p.m. presentation on ‘Eucharistic Adoration and Action’ from a Franciscan perspective. Fittingly, the Blessed Sacrament was exposed after the talk and individuals took time for personal prayer. After an hour  of Eucharistic adoration and an opportunity to thank others for their kindness shown to us, we were on the road again.

On another day San Juan Diego Catholic High School Staff Social Worker Sarah Deluca toured Sister Mary Ann Spanjers and Sister Julie Ann Sheahan. It was evident that the school is growing and good character development is fostered both in the classroom and an assigned work place.San Jose Church Austin TX

We also felt blessed to be able to return to Paulist University Catholic Center for Mass, Carbs for Christ and some one on one visits with young women. The staff here is ever refreshingly hospitable even to the point of  giving up one of the few campus parking spots when we were in need.

Always on the look out for significant Catholic images, visits to San Jose Adoration Chapel, Sacred Heart Parish Chapel as well as St. Louis the King, St. Ignatius the Martyr and San Francesco Xavier Churches provided quality time for prayer and admiration of art that truly focuses on time-tried elements of our faith.

On a personal note, we enjoyed visiting with young families of individuals who assist us in our vocation ministry. The faith and commitment of these parents-and others like them numerous to count- is ever a strong support to our own vocations. On this feast of St. Joseph, we pray for all families and all who are discerning their vocations! May all be attentive to the Holy Spirit and find joy in serving others!

  1. The blessings of meeting so many good people in such a short time continues to affirm the very real presence of Jesus in our world! Lent is a time of recognizing that Jesus is walking with us; this was reinforced through the conversations, liturgies, prayers and meals with numerous university students at the Catholic Campus Ministry Centers! There are many young adults of deep faith who are changing our world for the better! It is a joy to be connected to them!

Reading of your many travels for information and service is a joy. Thank you for keeping us posted women interested in serving in the Church in the Consecrated Life. That life is supported by good family life. Pictures of couples and babies show the foundation of religious life… family!
