How Do You Meet a Franciscan Sister: Diocese of Galveston Houston Cafe Catholica and Radio Interviews

by Sister Mary Ann on August 20, 2014

Life is filled with good lingering summer memories! Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity Sister Mary Ann Spanjers comments on the unforgettable experience of meeting many young adults at the July 2014 Diocese of Galveston Houston Café Catholica. She also highlights interviews for the Diocesan Radio Ministry in English and Spanish with Madeline Johnson and Sergio Castillo .

Café Catholica with Cardinal DiNardo

Praying with the 900 young adults during the Eucharist at Café Catholica was in itself inspiring; listening , with them, to Cardinal DiNardo’s presentation on Pope Francis’ Encyclical, “The Joy of the Gospel” deepened this experience of being called to be “sent”!

“The more one senses one’s call, the more personal one will become, because you will see yourself in relation to Jesus.”  The Cardinal went on to stress the message of Pope Francis that the Poor are central to the Gospel, citing Luke 14, the rich man’s sin was being unaware of Lazarus. We are called to be attentive to the people in our lives, especially those who are overlooked. Who do we notice?

The radio Interview was also an enlivening experience! Sharing about our Franciscan call to be attentive to the needs of our Church and our world today is at the core of Franciscan life. Franciscan Sisters interviewed for Diocese of Houston Radio Ministry

Young women whom Jesus is calling to join us bring the gifts God has given to them for the good of the Church! As Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity we trust the Holy Spirit to guide us in developing these gifts and discovering how we, as Sisters, are able to touch God’s people in unique ways by being ourselves, members of a Franciscan Community, where we are never alone!

  1. It was thrilling to hear of the Sisters’ trip, encounters with young people, and the working of the Holy Spirit in so many encounters. Thank you to the Sisters who served in this “adventure” and for all who made hospitality and reality.

  2. Sister Carmen Marie says:

It was truly a gift to be part of the experience of Cafe Catholica! The whole atmosphere was one of joy, faith and hunger for God. The young adults who were present brought the above (joy, faith and hunger) in bucketfuls. There was a tremendous openness to what the Cardinal had to say about his experiences and about the Pope’s encyclical “The Joy of the Gospel.”
They were open about what they are striving to bring to their various parishes and were seeking ways to further this mission. The one other place I have experienced this kind of “Spirit” is at the Religious Education Congress in Los Angeles, CA. Again a true gift!
