What Happens During a Franciscan Initial Formation Weekend

by Sister Julie Ann on January 23, 2014

Everyone was on high alert! A notice was posted early last week in our Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity mailroom that our Temporary Professed Sisters would be arriving from Arizona, Hawaii and Wisconsin by Friday evening for the Initial Formation Weekend. Sarah, (now a postulant for 2 weeks) was eager to not only meet, but get to know better Sister Regina Rose, Sister Monica and Sister Pamela Catherine. Enthusiasm and joy was in abundance!

Franciscan Initial Formation WeekendThe weekend included:

  • Plenty of time for conversations both at meals, in the hallways and gathered in St. Al’s Homeroom
  • Community prayer times, but also a special Eucharist just for those in Initial Formation
  • Personal Prayer Time
  • Recreation (some lively ‘just for fun’ games and opportunities for some good ‘brisk’ walks outside-conditions were not friendly for ice skating on Silver Lake)
  • Asssumption Province of Friars Minor Father Joachim Studwell OFM presented new insights on the topic of Contemplative Prayer for a Saturday Recollection Day
  • Planning for Camp Franciscan (yes, we are almost ready to post information!)

I even met Sarah once time through Jennifer…she seems enjoying being a sister with you all. God bless her!

It was very rejuvenating and renewing! It was wonderful to see the Sisters and the lay staff again! I enjoyed getting to know our new postulant, Sarah and Father Kim’s talks were great!

Thank you, Sister Theresa, for the well planned weekend. Fr. Kim was excellent! It gave me a new way of looking at contemplative prayer. His personal experiences were very meaningful and fitting examples for the topic.
Those in initial formation were a delight to be with!

  4. Sister Elaine says:

There seemed to be a very ‘at-ease’ sense to the weekend, yet everyone was aware of the depth of the theme, and an openness to the Spirit was present.

It was great to hear of the meaningful experience of this formation week-end. We are blessed to have you as part of our Community and I am so grateful for the rich and varied experiences our young members are receiving, Really, we are all in formation for our entire lives. It is up to each of us to be open to the Spirit and be vibrant, joyful people in the Lord.
I thank you for your enthusiasm and deep desire to serve the Lord in our Community. God bless each of you.

    Sarah and Sisters,
I’m happy you experienced so much joy and had a great weekend. It was so nice to see S. Monica and S. Pamela Catherine at the SLC Mass. Sorry I missed you S. Regina Rose. At least you are just a few miles down the road.
