Franciscan Community Welcomes New Novice

by Sister Julie Ann on June 9, 2013

Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity love this time of year. Not only did we celebrate God’s goodness at Sister Regina Rose’s First Profession of Vows on the Feast of Corpus Christi,  but today, June 9, 2013,  Sister Rexann (Rexann) became a Novice in our Congregation.

The afternoon Rite of Initiation into Religious Life was a simple Community ceremony in St. Mary Chapel at our Motherhouse. Sister Rexann was given a habit and veil,Franciscan-Novice-Sister-Rexann-June-9-2013 signs of the consecrated life, as well as her religious name. Young women have the option of submitting 3 choices to our Community Director for consideration of a religious name.  Since religious life is following God’s call to  live in a more intense way baptismal consecration, Sister Rexann’s baptismal name was a perfect choice.

Originally from Raleigh, MS where Catholics are few in number and women religious are rarely seen, Sister Rexann chose 2 Scripture readings that were included in the prayer ritual. The texts confirm her desire to respond generously in  selfless service to God’s people.

  • 1 Samuel 3:1-10

During the time young Samuel was minister to the Lord under Eli, the word of the LORD was scarce and vision infrequent… The Lord called to Samuel, who answered, “Here I am.

  • John 12:24-26

Amen, amen, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat;but if it dies, it produces much fruit. Whoever loves his lifeloses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will preserve it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there also will my servant be. The Father will honor whoever serves me.

Franciscan-Novice-Sister-Rexann-with-Director-Sister-Natalie-and-Sister-LouiseCommunity Director Sister Louise Hembrecht prayed this blessing on the new novice.

Sister Rexann, may the Lord of peace make you perfect and holy; and may you be kept safe and blameless, spirit, soul, and body,, for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. God has called you and He will not fail you. (I Thes 5:23)

In closing all sang and prayed our traditional Blessing of St. Francis.  Of course, a convent cafeteria reception line allowed time for personal greetings for our new member and great rejoicing.
