How Do You Meet Franciscan Sisters

by Sister Julie Ann on February 18, 2013

Do you want to meet Franciscan Sisters? It is really not a hard assignment to have a face to face conversation with Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity.  A simple interest in our discernment retreats or filling out our on-line inquiry form can lead to our Vocation Team having a meaningful conversation with you. This often happens when we are on the road to some place else and can schedule a coffee house stop between here and there.

Our last two caffeinated stops have been in the Milwaukee area. This was our first time to frequent Alterra Coffee in two different locations. Besides meeting some great young women, we were very aware of the goodness of other customers. Would  you believe a kind young man gifted us with a chocolate-hearted, red velvet cup cake on the feast of St. Cyril and Methodius?  (He was hopeful that we did not give up deserts for Lent.) Another kind gentleman was sad that we already had our warm drink, since he would have gladly blessed us with a cup of coffee. His parents always were gracious to priests and religious and he tries to carry  on the family tradition. Our coffee house stories are some of our most precious memories-good people, good conversation, good time.

Another recent request to learn more about our congregation created a pause at UW Eau Claire Newman Center. One college student’s curiosity led to a gathering of other friends and us. Not only were we able to share some of our own Year of Faith Franciscan community podcasts, but we also passed around  a 3 step guide (identify, listen, respond) discernment guide based on Father Anthony Gittens, CSSp’s wisdom. Personal sharing was very touching. The young women reflected honestly about their own process of decision making and desire to seek God’s will. We were also blessed to meet their Catholic Newman Center pastor Fr. George Szews.

” Behold, now is a very acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation. Working together, then, we appeal to you not to receive the grace of God in vain. For he says: ‘In an acceptable time I heard you,and on the day of salvation I helped you.” 2 Cor 6: 2, 1
