Franciscan Family Celebrates St. Clare’s 800th Anniversary

by Sister Julie Ann on April 1, 2012

Today on Palm Sunday, April 1, 2012, Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity celebrated the 800th Anniversary of Saint Clare of Assisi’s call to follow Jesus with Franciscan Friars of the Assumption BVM Province, Sisters of St. Francis of the Holy Cross, Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother, Secular Franciscans and others gathered at St. Mary of the Angels Church, Green Bay, WI for a festive Evening Prayer of Light.

Here are some reasons why the prayer was especially meaningful:

When the Franciscan Family gathers it is ever a joyful time of fellowship and a prayer of praise. Lively conversations were many among the brothers and sisters. Silence was profound and singing was full.

As someone said on entering the church, “My, there has to be a lot of people in church. Cars are parked everywhere outside.”

Because the story of Saint Clare includes St. Mary of the Angels Church in Assisi, to pray in a church with the same name in Green Bay, WI was the next best thing to being there. The friars couldn’t have been more welcoming.

Saint Clare’s Palm Sunday liturgy and eventual evening walk  to meet Francis and the  friars to begin her life as a consecrated woman was reinacted with proper reverence and heartfelt joy.

Sister Jane Riha, Sister Myra Smith and Sister Julie Ann Sheahan planned a ‘green’ prayer using only song books for psalms. This helped everyone to listen attentively to readings and focus on the present moment.

This prayer service was amazing! I appreciated every moment. Regina also made a stunning interpretation of the walk of Clare. Everything about this service was inspring: the readers, the music, the congregational responses (very expressive and quiet the rest of the time), and all the people who played a roll in this prayer expereince. Thanks to all of you.

Thank you to all who took part in preparing such an inspiring Vespers service. It truly makes one proud of being a member of the Franciscan family. May the Lord continue to bless us all.

We too, here at St. Francis of Assisi, Greenwood, MS.  joined you on Palm Sunday in a special Evening Prayer of Light. The Franciscan Friars, Franciscan Sisters, Secular Franciscans and others gathered in church to pray and praise God in memory of the 800th anniversary of Clares’ entrance in to the Franciscan family. What a blessing  it is to share  in this special event and family.

Gathering as a Franciscan Family to remember St. Clare’s daring emptying of herself into God was so renewing and inspiring! Having Regina take Clare’s role was beautiful and meaningful!

St. Clare, please continue to intercede for all young women desiring to give themselves to God!

Here at Zanesville, Ohio we too gathered in our little chapel in the evening and used the prayer service found in our Franciscan Pilgrimage Books that faith-filled night when Clare went to join Francis’ way of life. There are some very thought provoking questions in each section
