Here’s a Catholic School Children’s Liturgy for Palm Sunday

by Sister Julie Ann on April 15, 2011

Franciscan Sister of Christian Charity Sister Kathleen Murphy and second grade students reacted the Palm Sunday Gospel at a recent St. Francis of Assisi School liturgy in Greenwood, MS. Enjoy a gallery of photos that reveal a whole class actively and creatively engaged in telling the story. Note the palm branches, their cloaks on the ground and the donkey! Details are covered in the children’s script.

Father Gregory Plata, OFM, Franciscan Friar of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Province, proclaims this Gospel:

When Jesus and the disciples drew near Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find an ass tethered, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them here to me. And if anyone should say anything to you, reply, ‘The master has need of them.’ Then he will send them at once.”

This happened so that what had been spoken through the prophet might be fulfilled: Say to daughter Zion,“Behold, your king comes to you, meek and riding on an ass, and on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.”

The disciples went and did as Jesus had ordered them. They brought the ass and the colt and laid their cloaks over them, and he sat upon them. The very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and strewed them on the road. The crowds preceding him and those following kept crying out and saying: “Hosanna to the Son of David; blessed is the he who comes in the name of the Lord; hosanna in the highest.” And when he entered Jerusalem the whole city was shaken and asked, “Who is this?” And the crowds replied, “This is Jesus the prophet, from Nazareth in Galilee.” (Mt. 21:1-11)

  1. Our call is to “live” the life of Christ in all we are about! I think that this is especially true as He walks with us during this Holy Week! The children, sisters, teachers, friars, parents, and parishioners of St. Francis in Greenwood, are doing this in a very real way as they pray together during this Mass! Thanks so much for sharing with us!

What a great way to make the Gospel story come alive! How often we adults are evangelized by children! Let's hope this was true for all the adults present for this service! Great work on Sr. Kathleen's part!

The kids did a great job of celebrating. When I was reviewing the upcoming events of Palm Sunday with my Kindergarten class, I asked them what would be happening in their churches this weekend. One of the boys who is Baptist announced enthusiastically, “My church will be having Pom-pom Sunday!” Sounds about right! Hurray for Jesus!

Beautiful, Sr. Kathleen and kids… You make the Scriptures come alive for us. What a precious gift!

Thank you Sister Kathleen and Children for adding the visuals to the Gospel message! These add a freshness to understanding the events of Palm Sunday! I am sure that Palm Sunday will always have special meaning and understanding for you and for all the people present at Mass. Thank you for sharing your faith!
