One of Manitowoc’s Vocation Secrets

by Sister Julie Ann on November 20, 2010

Manitowoc Serrra Club and Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity not only have a open ‘vocation’ relationship supported by heart-felt prayer, but also they spend meal time together at least twice a year. The secret of this long-time friendship is simply one of presence and love.

Manitowoc Serrans and Franciscan Women in Formation

Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity Postulants and Novices answer questions of Manitowoc Serra Club on November 20, 2010 at their Motherhouse.

Saturday, November 20, 2010 marked another one of those gatherings for meal time around the altar in St. Mary Chapel and later in our cafeteria. We all get involved. Postulants, Novices and Sisters are found in various places outside and inside welcoming our friends.

In between Mass and dinner, Postulants provide ‘live vocation’ entertainment. They simply share a bit about themselves and are open to any questions the Serrans may ask of them. Needless to say, the time went fast. And the questions and answers are ever seasoned with humor!

This year after a hearty meal, we gifted each of our guests with a plate of homemade convent cookies. We like to present something that keeps alive the ‘sweet’ memory of the day.

The next big gathering of the two groups will be a summer picnic in August 2011 at the Newton Firemen Park.

The Manitowoc Serra Club is very much appreciated for the support they give in prayer and presence fostering vocations. Thank you for those who could come today and for those who were here in spirit.

    God bless each of you.

Praise the Lord! What a great idea of having a get-together with the members of the Serra Club with the Postulants, Novices & Sisters. This way the Serrans can see their prayers bearing fruit. Triple blessed with Mass (spiritual food), Sharing Fellowship and Partaking of the delicious Convent food.

  3. It is the faith of our families, friends, parishioners, priests, sisters, parents, grandparents, and wonderful people like the Serrans who nurture, support, pray, and encourage young men and women in responding to Jesus! All of these people in our lives also call us to live in faithfulness the vocation God has called us to! We Give Thanks!

I have wonderful memories of the Serra club. I was chosen to read my eighth grade essay on a religious vocation to the Serrans of Appleton. I was picked up at Mackville, by a member, escorted (driven) to their meeting in Appleton and read my essay to a very distinguished group of men.. I was treated with great respect as an eighth grader. Later, I applied to Holy Family Convent for entrance as a freshmen aspirant. The Serrans are still doing wonderful work in many areas.

  5. Yesterday's get-together was a little bitter sweet. Jerry Dietrich, brother of one of our Sisters and faithful Serran, died in the last days. It was fitting to remember him and his family at Eucharist and know he was with us in spirit along with others who are already part of an active Manitowoc Heavenly Serran Club. Relationships like these only get better!

A great event to bring together so many that value and support vocations to the religious life.
