graylogo.gifHow often is a community service award actually presented to another community? Here’s one example.  West Point, NE Chamber of Commerce’s 2010 Community Service Recognition was awarded to the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity.

Although the current Franciscans serving at Franciscan Care Services, Guardian Angels Catholic School and Central Catholic High School were enthusiastically present for a dinner on February 21, 2010, the award actually included all the many members of the religious community who had been sent to serve in West Point during significant years of the town’s proud history.

Sister Louise Hembrecht, OSF, Community Director, was happy to be on hand to receive the engraved plaque having once taught at Catholic Central High School. Sister Adrianna Schouten, OSF, council member, and Sister Laura Wolf, OSF, President of  Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity Healthcare Ministry, Inc., were also present for this nightly celebration saluting the selfless generosity of many of the Franciscan Sisters in education and health care.

The award is given to someone ‘who goes about quietly doing good’ in the community of West Point. Needless to say, the Franciscan Sisters were surprised and touched that others would consider them worthy of this honor.

  1. Knowing so many of our Sisters from West Point and the surrounding NE area; and many more who have served there throughout the many years of our Community’s history, it is a joy to hear of this award. I am sure that our Sisters have received many mutual blessings from all the good people of West Point as well! Special congratulations to our Sisters presently serving in this faithfilled community!

  2. Sister Annette Kurey says:

West Point is wonderful rural community in which to live and serve. It is to the credit of the many Sisters who preceded us and gave their all, that this award was so graciously given to our Community. We, who now live here, were truly blessed to be the recipients.

  3. Sister Joellen Kohlmann says:

We had a wonderful evening enjoying good food and great friends at the Chamber celebration. Most of all though, it was humbling to realize the hard work of those who have gone before us and it was enjoyable to hear so many stories and memories. But, the highlight of the weekend was having six of our Sisters from the Motherhouse join in living community with us in West Point, Nebraska. I am so grateful for being a member of the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity.

  4. Sister Pat Sevcik says:

Congratulations to each of you serving in West Point, Nebraska, on the reception of the 2010 Community Service Recognition Award! You can each be proud of the dedicated service you give in all of the varied ministries in which you are engaged. May God continue to gift you with all that you need to carry on in the spirit of St.Francis. God bless you!

  5. Sister Mary Beth Prinz says:

Congratulations to all the Sisters who have ever served in West Point! We continue to receive cards congratulating our community and thanking us for our ministry here. Know that you are remembered. The award was given in 2010 but ever since 1885 our Sisters have been serving this West Point community, and were deserving of a Community Service Award.
